CELEBRATE YOUR LOVE AND LIFE // DOCUMENTING YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Kingston Engagement & Couples Photographer // Relaxed, Documentary-Style Sessions

A low-pressure date night with a professional third wheel. An engagement session is a space to celebrate your relationship in its natural state—no white dress or timeline required. Whether we're grabbing a beer at your favorite local spot or hiking through Frontenac Park, it’s about capturing the way you two actually interact. It’s a chance to get a little bit quirky, a little bit intimate, and a lot more comfortable being yourselves in front of my camera.

My sessions are laid-back, free-flowing, and just a little quirky. They’re a chance for us to get to know each other—you, me, and the camera. You’ll quickly see how I use subtle direction to help you feel comfortable and capture natural, authentic moments. Together, we find a rhythm that feels easy and true to who you are. I learn a lot by watching how couples interact—what feels natural, what doesn’t—and that insight is invaluable as we prepare for your wedding day.

Engagement Session Planning

  • Confidence is everything in photographs. What you choose to wear should be something you feel comfortable in. Wear clothing that compliments your physical features, your individuality, something you can move in, and something that makes you feel amazing.

Feel confident in not only yourself, but the passion you have for each other. My objective is to create a space for you guys feel confident and comfortable being intimate in front of the camera.

CONFIDENCE AND PASSION ARE TWO VERY IMPORTANT ASPECTS TO A QUALITY COUPLES PORTRAIT.

  • While weekday evenings aren’t always possible, they often come with some big perks—sidewalks are quieter, parks are less crowded, and we’re usually able to book further in advance if you’re open to a weekday session.

Timing your engagement session can also depend on how you plan to use the photos. Save the Dates are typically sent out at least five months before the wedding. With an average engagement gallery turnaround of 2–4 weeks, I recommend scheduling your session at least five months ahead of your wedding date if you plan to use the images for that purpose.

If the session is simply a chance for us to get to know each other, for you to get comfortable in front of the camera, or to capture photos outside of wedding attire, then you have complete flexibility. Choose a time of year that feels most you. Ice cream cones shine on warm spring or summer days, cozy plaid layers feel right at home in autumn, and beach or campfire sessions are perfect for those long summer evenings.

  • The best locations have defining characteristics—places that feel quirky, unexpected, or deeply meaningful to you. I draw inspiration from wherever we’re shooting, so choosing a location that reflects your shared history, personalities, or passions makes a real difference. Is there a place that inspires you? Somewhere sentimental? A spot tied to your hobbies, careers, or the way you spend time together? The more personal it is, the better.

If your style leans modern and minimal, consider a city block with clean storefronts, an architecturally interesting building or restaurant, an art museum, a parking garage with bold geometric lines, or an industrial setting. If you’re food lovers, an outdoor market or picnic could be perfect. Breweries for the drinkers. Museums for the thinkers. Truly—anywhere works. Some of the best sessions happen in the most unexpected places. The shoot doesn’t need to be overly conceptual, but it always helps when you love where we are.

If you have a concept or theme in mind, feel free to share it with me. We can collaborate on bringing your ideas to life, and I’m always happy to scout new and unique locations just for you.

  • Think about the colours and style of any potential locations and how you can compliment them with your outfits. Your outfits should also be a reflection of you.

A touch of red, yellow, or blue can make anything pop and help you stand out from the background. Adding a pair of red or yellow shoes, or a bright blue shirt or tie will transform your outfits. A simple necklace, wide rimmed hat, bright socks, a distinctive belt, a scarf, a set of bracelets, or add some layers that make your look just a little more editorial. Complement your accessories to each other; it’s a perfect way to bring your outfits together. Think about colours that go well together without being too matchy. Dress as though you are attending the same event.

Be sure to bring a comfortable pair of shoes to change in and out of because we’ll probably do a bit of walking. During the session, plan on only carrying the bare minimum. If you can, leave purses, bags, cellphones, etc in your car… or I can carry them for you.

  • I’ve found that over the years, 90 minutes is a good amount of time together. I schedule around 2 hours for the session, typically leading into sunset, but tend to use around 90 minutes for shooting.
